A Kindred Spirit (Phil. 2:19-24)
19/01/2007After exhorting them into humility through the example of Christ, and godly living as children of light, he switches to telling them of his plans to send Timothy to them. The reason that he wanted to send him was so that Timothy would be able to report to Paul how they were doing. This passage offers a helpful description of what Paul valued in friendship.
Timothy is the only one that Paul could trust because he says that he is of “kindred spirit”. In Paul’s ministry of the gospel, he was concerned with having community and partnership with those whom he ministered with. He had a connection with Timothy that was very valuable because it meant that he could trust him. He was more than a good hang-out buddy. He was a man who was deeply concerned with the things that Paul was and their spirit’s were connected. Timothy was seeking after Christ’s interests and not his own selfish ambition and pride. Paul knew that Timothy would not steal from Paul’s ministry or spread a bad report about him.
He had a deep respect for Timothy because he served Paul like a child serves their father. He was passionate to see the advance of the gospel and he recognized Paul’s place of authority and power, and wanted to serve and help him. He completely gave himself to serving Paul and his interests, which goes back to 2:1-4 where Paul encourages Philippi to do this. Not only is he giving news about his activities and plans, but he is giving another example along with Jesus of the type of character and attitude that is required as the body of Christ.
